So last week was awesome. I hit a 100 kg squats for reps, deadlifts were feeling awesome and even my benching wasn’t as horrific as it normally is, thinks were looking good!

So ¬†this week I have to see how heavy I can lift on all three lifts, it didn’t go well!! What was I doing wrong? Why were my hips so freaking sore? Why did I want to go home and cry?! Was I having a nervous breakdown????

No!!! Turns out mother nature was at work and ruining my training by inflicting a period on me! I felt horrifically weak, everything seemed tedious and very emotional and I seemed to have ballooned into an exact replica of the little girl who blows up like a blueberry in Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory.

Now you may think that I am being over sensitive and exaggerating but the truth is that your menstrual cycle can really mess things up for you. Dependent on how badly your periods affect you will in turn reflect on how much they affect your training.

Personally I find that I just want to curl up and die let alone lift anything but I insist on putting on my baggiest tee and dragging my ass to the gym, I have learned to accept that no PB’s will be hit during that time of the month (but it still upsets me!) but I will feel worse if I deviate from training.

Just to add insult to injury, during your period you may be at increased risk of ACL injuries. Australian researchers found that  women had decreased motor control during their menstrual cycle.

It’s not all bad news though, exercise as we all know releases the happy hormones, endorphin’s!! These bad boys lift our mood and cheer us up even when we are cramping like a bitch!

We can also attempt to beat the period induced bloating (god knows I need all the help I can get with this one!). Avoid salty foods, drink a shit tonne of water and if you can find it drink dandelion tea. Dandelion tea has worked wonders for me when trying to combat the bloating.

if periods burned calories

On a serious note its is important to go easy on yourself and understand that your period may affect your workouts but it is just a tiny blip and nothing to stress about. So I shall now sign off, get my dandelion tea and strap that hot water bottle to my tummy!!
